Guide to Services

Emergency

As an acute care facility, the St. Mary's Hospital Emergency Departmetn (ED) is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to handle emergency medical situations.  Our goal is to care for all individuals who enter our Center with the utmost of sensitivity and compassion.  After an initial assessment, patients are cared for based on the nature of the illness or injury.  Those in life-threatening, critical-care situations are always given top priority, and helicopter transport is available to rapidly transport critically ill patients to other facilities when needed.

In order to provide care and protect patient privacy, visitors are allowed only at the discretion of the staff.  Visits may not be permitted during some treatments or procedures.

On the Fast Track to Wellness

A set of Fast Track rooms is available within the Emergency Care Center for patients with less serious illnesses and injuries.  Our Fast Track is staffed by highly trained emergency medicine physicians, physician assistants, and specially-trained nurses committed to providing quality service.  When you arrive at the Emergency Care Center, a triage nurse will thoroughly assess your situation to determine whether you will be seen by the emergency team or will become a Fast Track patient.

ExpressCare

ExpressCare versus the Emergency Care Center

Your child is running a fever and the doctor’s office just closed – what do you do? While it’s tempting to make a trip to the Emergency Care Center, consider instead going to the St. Mary’s Hospital Express Care in Charlotte Hall. With trusted caregivers on hand and ready to help, you can get a quick diagnosis and return to the comfort of your own home.

Did you know that the same highly-trained physician group that practices at St. Mary’s Hospital are available at Express Care? When you visit Express Care, you’ll receive the same compassionate care you’d receive at our hospital, but in a relaxed atmosphere that’s similar to your doctor’s office. If you are concerned about a minor illness or injury, it can be tempting to head straight for the hospital. It’s important to evaluate your situation carefully before making a decision. For lesser ailments, Express Care may be your solution.

Growing with Southern Maryland

If you’ve driven by our facility within the last few months, you’ve probably noticed the construction that is taking place near the front of the hospital.  Currently, we have a number of ongoing projects affecting both the interior and exterior of the hospital.  To accommodate the growing number of Emergency Care Center (ECC) visitors, St. Mary's Hospital is expanding this department by adding a Fast Track room for minor illnesses and injuries as well as an acute examination room.  Furthermore, the ECC’s lobby will be expanded to increase patient comfort and a second triage room will be constructed.  This additional space will ensure that patients are assessed more quickly upon their arrival to the hospital and receive individualized attention in an efficient manner.

St. Mary's Hospital plans on constructing a special radiography room solely for use by Emergency Care Center patients.  Individuals visiting the ECC who require diagnostic testing will soon experience faster turnaround times as they receive a variety of imaging services in closer proximity to their examination rooms.  One of the most exciting additions to the Emergency Care Center is a 64-slice CT scanner.  Within seconds, this model can scan the heart and vessels to determine if a person is at increased risk for heart disease.  It then displays these images as detailed three-dimensional pictures for the technologist to examine.  For patients, this translates into speed and diagnostic detail.  In addition the new CT scanner, St. Mary's Hospital has also acquired a new MRI machine.  MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is a procedure used by doctors to peer inside the body using harmless radio frequencies.  The new MRI is one of the fastest, most powerful pieces of medical equipment available – and we’re thrilled to provide patients with this technology.
